Independent Living Philosophy
Our Philosophy of Independent Living embraces our Vision, Mission and Values and provides the foundational basis of working with the people we serve. Independent Living means that people with disabilities have the given right and opportunity to fully participate in society, so therefore we at CORIL will:
1. Respect and value the unique individuality, needs and strengths of the people we serve.
2. Empower the people we serve to exercise maximum informed choice about the direction they want their lives to take and pursue activities and interests of their own choosing.
3. Consistently encourage the people we serve to be self-directed and determined in formulating their own goals or service plans, and in a manner that supports healthy risk taking, learning, peer support, innovation, personal responsibility and accountability.
4. Continue our strong individual, local and state advocacy on behalf of the people we serve.
5. Encourage the potential ability of the people we serve to be empowered to participate as a self-advocate or systems advocate so that people with disabilities can live independently and develop their full capabilities.
6. Foster the physical, cognitive, psychological, sensory and other apsects of performance in a variety of settings to support engagement in everyday life activities with the community that affect health, well-being and quality of life.
7. Ensure that all present and future programs and services are strength-based in orientation and support our values of professionalism, independence, teamwork and integrity.
