Disability Awareness Program
CORIL continued our annual outreach program to local schools in Central Oregon and provided disability awareness training to over 2000 students in 2007.
CORIL staff and volunteers with various disabilities and personal life challenges go into various elementary, middle and high school classrooms and share their personal stories, triumphs and realities of living with their disabilities. Students are given ample opportunities to ask questions and volunteers and our staff are able to dispel many myths that young people often grow up with when they are not given these relaxed educational forums. Through humor, physical demonstrations and role playing students grow in their awareness, sensitivity and approachability to those future friends and family members, or perhaps even themselves, who are faced with a significant disability.
